Lavender Sleep Mask
You'll need: Dried Lavender A variety of fabric scraps in complimentary colours A length of ribbon Water Soluble stabiliser Clear thread Gold thread |
|
| The front of the mask is made using a simple technique in which you'll create a new fabric out of tiny scraps of old ones. It's a great way to use up the tiniest fabric leftovers you have. For this project I was inspired by the lavender I was using and used a range of purples, blues and pinks. You really want there to be a good variety of tones in the fabrics - and I think it always looks nice if you make sure there's a bit of sparkle in there. |
|
Step One Start by cutting your fabric scraps into tiny pieces. Mix them up in a bowl until you are happy with the colour mix and quantity.
Step Two Cut a rectangle of any scrap fabric so that it is easily bigger than the mask template below. Cut a piece of soluble stabiliser to the same size.

Step Three Spray the fabric rectangle with a little temporary spray adhesive such as 505. Spread the cut fabrics over the top and complete the sandwich with the piece of soluble stabiliser on the top.
Step Four The sandwich will be quite wobbly at this stage, so work carefully. Thread your sewing machine with clear thread and sew round all 4 sides of the fabric rectangle to secure it. Then, using a straight stitch carefully sew quite placed lines in a grid pattern over the entire sandwich. In my example each line is about 7mm apart. |
|
Your fabric is now completed. All you need to do is rinse the stabiliser away and leave it to dry.
Step Five Choose a piece of fabric about the same size as your sandwich. Make sure this one is soft enough to feel comfortable against your face, and a toning colour. Place it behind the sandwich, wrong sides facing. Next take two pieces of ribbon, long enough to tie behind the head and carefully pin them so that one end of each ribbon is sandwiched between the two fabrics, one at each side. |
|
Step Six Copy the shape of the mask template below onto your fabric. Set your sewing machine to a satin stitch and, using the gold thread, stitch through all the layers at once, creating the outline of the mask. Leave a small gap, big enough to stuff the mask with dried lavender. Once the lavender is inside the mask, stitch up the final piece of the outline.

Step Seven Finally, cut out the shape of the mask, just outside the gold satin stitching. Take care not to cut through the stitching, or the ribbon ties. Your Lavender Sleep Mask is now complete. |
